Professional Experience
July, 1994 to Present – Freelance Writer & Consultant
Managed projects, wrote news releases, newsletters and speeches as well as coordinated media events for corporate clients including Fortune 500 companies (Cargill, Rockwell International and Weyerhaeuser). In addition, planned, implemented and evaluated media relations campaigns for not-for-profit organizations, professional associations, provincial departments, a federal-provincial agriculture research fund, Crown corporations and the International Energy Agency Greenhouse Gas (IEA GHG) project in Weyburn.
Major Achievements:
- Developed, implemented and measured the 2004 media relations campaign surrounding the release of the four-year, multi-discipline study conducted for the International Energy Agency (IEA) examining the carbon dioxide storage in the Weyburn oil fields of EnCana Corporation.
- Developed and implemented a $1.2-million strategic communication plan for the $91-million Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Food Innovation Fund (AFIF). The federal-provincial program supported 300 projects in eight key sectors of the agricultural economy.
- Invented and coordinated Innovation Report, a 16-page periodical including tendering for writing, prepress work, printing and distribution of 450,000 copies. Cost per reader was just 56 cents.
- Mirrored AFIF project in French, where appropriate, including Innovation Report as a collaborative effort with L’Eau Vive, the province’s only French weekly newspaper.
- Researched and wrote annual reports for AFIF, Saskatchewan Wetlands Conservation Corporation, Saskatchewan Research Council, Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association and Petroleum Technology Research Centre.
- Conducted media training for professional associations, Saskatchewan departments and Crown corporations as well as designed and delivered a special half day crisis communications clinic for delegates to the 2002 Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) convention.
- Arranged and conducted more than 24 media events in Humboldt, Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Vancouver since 2003.
- Author of Regina: Ready For the New Millennium (1999) and Building Our Future: A People’s Architectural History of Saskatchewan (2004).
- Finalist in the Non-Fiction Category of the 2005 Book Publishers Association of Alberta for Building Our Future: A People’s Architectural History of Saskatchewan.
- Finalist in the Regina Author Category of the 2005 Saskatchewan Book Awards for Building Our Future: A People’s Architectural History of Saskatchewan.
June, 1990 to June, 1994 -- SaskFerco Products Inc.
Manager of Corporate Affairs who took the lead role in coordinating the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) required for federal and provincial government approvals of construction and start-up of the world’s largest nitrogen fertilizer complex at Belle Plaine, Saskatchewan. SaskFerco is a $435-million, commercial joint venture involving Cargill, CitiCorp and the Government of Saskatchewan. Initiated and built strategic partnerships between SaskFerco and stakeholders such as conservation, environmental and wildlife organizations as well as local farmers and business leaders.
SaskFerco Major Achievements:
- Coordinated pre-production tour for 1,200 potential customers in 1991 while the SaskFerco complex was under construction. No injuries. Completed under budget of $200,000.
- Environmental Impact Statement researched and filed in less than six months. Completed under budget of $500,000.
March, 1988 to June, 1990 -- Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd.
Manager of Public Affairs for the Saskatchewan division during construction of the $235-million paper mill in Prince Albert, $10-million expansion of the sawmill in Big River and $50-million addition to Saskatoon Chemicals. Developed philanthropic program guidelines including corporate sponsorships
Major Accomplishments:
- Generated public support to secure 20-year Forest Management License Agreement (FMLA);
- Coordinated Grand Opening of the paper mill (1989-4,000 visitors), Big River Sawmill (1990-1,500 visitors) and Saskatoon Chemicals Ltd. (1990-1,000 visitors);
- Invented SaskSpirit, a quarterly publication, to brand the Weyerhaeuser corporate image with influential Saskatchewan residents in 1989. Cost per reader was less than 40 cents.

Award-winning reporter, editor and national correspondent for The Canadian Press specialized in agriculture, business, politics and sports reporting. Filed copy for both CP, the newspaper wire service, and Broadcast News, the wire service for Canada’s cable companies, radio and television stations).
